Abstract:
This data were originally compiled by F.W.S. Craig and published in British Parliamentary Election Results, 1885-1918 and British Parliamentary Election Results, 1918-1949. Dr William Field created a digital version of this data which forms the basis of this study. However, History Data Service has made enhancements to the original digital files. Enhancements consist of the provision of a documentation guide explaining this data in more detail and flagging some potential errors and omissions that the first digital version of this data had in relation to the original printed sources. Note that these data files only refer to general elections.
Main Topics:
These data contain vote counts for each parliamentary constituency in Great Britain for each general election between 1885 and 1949. These files contain data for single and multiple seat constituencies. The variables found in the data files are: id - an identifier based on Craig's Sources (see the 'Data Sources' section below), seats - the number of seats in the constituency, name - the name of the constituency, the number of votes cast for the various parties in each general election, votes - the total number of votes cast, and turnout - the turnout figures for particular constituencies. Please note that this latter variable is not present in all data files.
Please note: this study does not include information on named individuals and would therefore not be useful for personal family history research.
