Abstract:

The purpose of this study was:
1. To estimate the number of visitor days to the 10 National Parks in England and Wales, the Broads and the New Forest (the term `Parks' refers to all 12 areas).
2. To provide information about the characteristics of visits to the Parks and the types of visitor coming to them.
3. To use, (for the first time), a comparable approach to surveying visitors in all the Parks in England and Wales.

The characteristics of Park visitors; the nature of the visits; the reasons why people visit the Parks and views about services and facilities; visitors' expenditure; the scale of visits and how the number of visits varies throughout the year.

Location of Units of Observation: National
Population: Visitors to the 10 National Parks of England and Wales, the Broads and the New Forest, who visited or passed through the survey locations from March to October 1994 between 10am and 8pm on survey days. Only people aged over 16 years were interviewed, although personal profile information was collected about all members of groups interviewed.

Methodology:

Time Dimensions: Cross-sectional (one-time) study
The survey may be repeated in 10 years.
Sampling Procedures: Site survey; next to pass - member of group to have next birthday was interviewed. Roadside survey; the next car to pass - driver interviewed.
Method of Data Collection: Face-to-face interview; Postal survey; Self-completion
Control Operations: Wild or consistency checks; Validation checks on data entry.
