Abstract:
To assess public opinion in the period preceding the 1979 General Election.

Degree of interest in Election, voting intention, party respondent thinks will be successful and by what margin, perception of differences between parties, which party has best policies/best leaders, which leader would make the best Prime Minister, party respondent feels is best for people like him/herself. Most urgent problem facing country, party most able to handle that problem, turnout intention, knowledge of candidates in own constituency, voting intention, whether voted at October 1974 Election and for which party. Frequency of discussing politics with friends, whether ever tries to persuade friends/colleagues or relatives to share views, whether would show support for party by: displaying a poster or car sticker/wearing a badge/attending meetings/canvassing/making financial contribution to campaign. Whether has discussed intended vote with friends or relatives, whether received visit from any of the parties (which) or seen any posters (which), whether noticed any damaged posters and for which party.
Background Variables
Newspaper readership, age finished full-time education, religion, accommodation tenure, car ownership, size of household, whether any children, employment status, occupation of head of household, trade union membership (respondent and spouse), self-perceived social class, age cohort and date of birth, sex (if female - whether housewife), marital status, social class, ethnic group, telephone ownership.
