DATA CURATION PROCEDURES

Data acquired for the UK Data Service collection undergo rigorous and comprehensive curation prior to publishing and release. This ensures that data, documentation and metadata are processed and published to the highest standard possible, both for ease of use in secondary analysis and for archival preservation.

The curation procedures carried out depend on the individual nature of each dataset and document, but as a general guide the following tasks are always undertaken:

NEW EDITION INFORMATION

The third edition (November 2020) includes Understanding Society participants who gave consent at Wave 4 and could be linked to the National Pupil Database (NPD). It includes NPD data up to academic year 2017/18. It also contains Understanding Society participants who gave consent and could be linked at Wave 1 and did not re-consent at Wave 4. NPD data up to academic year 2012/13 is included for these participants.

INFORMATION ON CONDITION OF USE

The Data Collection is available to users registered with the UK Data Service.

Commercial use is not permitted.

Use of the data requires approval from the data owner or their nominee. Users must apply for access via a Secure Access application.

Approved users must complete specialist training.

Users must be based in the UK when accessing data.

The Data Collection must be accessed via a secure virtual private network in a safe environment approved by the UK Data Service.
