Abstract:

This is a dataset comprising linked event records for 1% of the population of England and Wales (about 500,000 people at any one census). It was set up in 1974 to address problems with the adequacy of occupational mortality data, and the lack of longitudinal fertility data, but since then it has been used to address a wide range of other research questions.

Main Topics:

Topics cover:

Coverage:

Time Period Covered: From 26 April 1971 (ongoing)
Country: England and Wales
Spatial Units: Unit Postcode
Observation Units: Individuals
Kind of Data: Alpha/numeric data; Individual (micro) level

Universe Sampled:

Location of Units of Observation: National
Population: Includes everyone who has one of four birthdays, thus forming an approximately 1% sample of the population of England and Wales.

Methodology:

Time Dimensions: Longitudinal/panel/cohort
Sampling Procedures: The sample is selected using four dates of birth occurring in any year
Number of Units: 950,000
Method of Data Collection: Self-completion
Data Sources: Based on 1971, 1981, 1991 and 2001 census records. The individual records also contain data for events such as deaths, births to sample mothers, emigrations and cancer registrations.
