Study Number 5050 - English Longitudinal Study of Ageing: Waves 0-10, 1998-2023
DATA CURATION PROCEDURES
Data acquired for the UK Data Service collection undergo rigorous and comprehensive curation prior to publishing and release. This ensures that data, documentation and metadata are processed and published to the highest standard possible, both for ease of use in secondary analysis and for archival preservation.
The curation procedures carried out depend on the individual nature of each dataset and document, but as a general guide the following tasks are always undertaken:
- Disclosure review - if data confidentiality issues are identified, they are resolved in consultation with the data depositor;
- Data are checked for consistency and accuracy – for example undocumented/out-of-range codes;
- Variable and value label metadata are checked and enhancements undertaken as necessary;
- Multiple data and documentation formats may be generated for dissemination and preservation;
- A catalogue metadata record is generated and a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is assigned to the study where appropriate.
- Where the data are made available for online analysis, in addition to the checks above, question text may be added alongside variables and other enhancements made.

NEW EDITION INFORMATION
For the fortieth edition (January 2024), the Wave 10 core dataset and pensions grid dataset have been added to the study, along with the questionnaire documentation. The core dataset contains all core variables but does not contain longitudinal or cohort weights. Users should note that in Wave 10, the health section of the ELSA questionnaire has been revised and all respondents were asked about their health conditions anew, rather than following previously adopted approach of asking them to confirm previously recorded health conditions for those who have taken part in the past waves. Due to this reason, the health conditions feed-forward data will not be archived, as done in previous waves. A further edition of the Wave 10 data and documentation is planned within the first few months of 2024, which should include data with weights, IFS DVs, IFS Financial DVs, the technical report and user guide.
