ARCHIVE DOCUMENTATION STUDY NO: 4349 STUDY TITLE: Millennium Survey of Poverty and Social Exclusion, 1999 Details of Dataset received: Data and documentation received from Ms Naomi Finch, Social Policy Research Unit, University of York, Heslington, York, YO10 5DD, January 2001. Summary of value added outputs: Detailed checks of the data against the documentation have been made and cases checked etc. A substantial number of missing variable labels have been added by the UK Data Archive. All documentation files and the hard copy technical report have been converted to one single file - a4349uab.pdf. Notes, useful tips and hints: Please note that approximately 1000 variable and some value labels are truncated within this dataset as these have been read in from CAPI based software. The complete labelling can be found within the documentation. User comments and post-order corrections: January 2002 - New Edition A further version of the Millennium Survey of Poverty and Social Exclusion, 1999 was received from Ms Naomi Finch, Social Policy Research Unit, University of York, on 29 November 2001. The single SPSS dataset has been re-named pse2.por. The Depositor details below the changes made to the data: 'Some of the data had to be updated because there were some minor errors which related to other individuals in the PSE households but not the respondents. Unfortunately, these small errors gave an overall error of about 5%. Some of the more major corrections in the new code are: 1) Recalculating the ages which resulted in changes to the age of 100 people. 2) The inclusion of another 63 people in PSE households who were omitted due to coding errors. 3) The inclusion of a 0.3 weighting in the PSE equivalisation for disability and limiting long term illness (as we originally agreed to do). This change makes the pensioners results much more sensible. 4) Recalculating all the income variables to take account of the changes in age and household composition. 5) Recalculating the poverty thresholds to take account of the new income variables. The variables which have been updated are mainly at the end of the new dataset, after the variable hserial2. Some of these are simply corrected variables with the same name as the old version. These are, however, in a different order from the old version: pseagen oecdeq mccleq pseequiv chnginc hchange hreason newinc (this variable was newinc2 in the previous edition of the data) ghsinc diff pseinc oecdinc mccinc poverty poorgrp The following are also updated variables with the same names as the old variables but they were orginally situated near the beginning of the document (they are now at the end): twomeals meatfish heating dressgwn twoshoes newcloth tv roast carpet phone fridge bedding dryhome car diction presents coat washmash dishwas savings videomac and so on until: playgp holiday schtrip frendtea chnfu (this variable was chnfu01 in the previous edition of the data) The following are new variables: aspace adark aheat aleak adamp arot amould asit aother anone nocard4'
