Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to:
extend the British General Election Study to Northern Ireland (the British General Election Study, 1992 is held at The Data Archive under study number 2981)
provide longitudinal comparisons with previous work in the same area, namely Rose (1971) and Moxon-Browne (1983)
provide, for the first time, an attitudinal survey `locked into' a specific general election
to compare social attitudes in Northern Ireland and Britain.

Key topics covered in this study were: the social bases of political allegiance in Northern Ireland; the persisting importance of religious affiliation in Northern Ireland politics; the development of a loyalism-nationalism Likert scale; the continuities and changes in the evolution of self-perceived national identity 1968-1992; the territorial and local aspects of political interest, voting and party preference, the campaign issues and ideologies.
