Abstract:

The main aim of the project was to analyse the factors influencing trade unionism and politics in the Scots coalfields during the period 1874-1939. The objective of the census survey was to provide information on occupation, age, marital status and place of birth of mineworkers in ten localities which could be used in conjunction with a range of qualitative sources.

Population: All mineworkers resident in the ten survey localities (Annbank, Ayrshire; Hurlford, Ayrshire; Blantyre, Lanarkshire; Larkhall, Lanarkshire; Craigneuk, Lanarkshire; Douglas and Coalburn, Lanarkshire; Newtongrange, Midlothian; Prestonpans, East Lothian; Culross, Fifeshire; and Wemyss, Fifeshire) on the night of the 1891 census.
Mineworkers were defined as those mining employees who were eligible to join the main miners' union in the 1890s. Mining occupational groups which were excluded from the survey include: coal mining manager; colliery clerk; colliery oversmen; underground oversman; colliery overseer; colliery enginekeeper; colliery contractor; colliery ropeman; coal carter; colliery tradesmen (such as blacksmiths, engineers, bricklayers, carpenters).
