SN:3481 National Diet and Nutrition Survey of Children Aged 1 1/2 to 4 1/2 Years 1992-1993 This study consists of four waves collected at various times of the year. (Months for Dental records differ slightly). Wave1 July to September 1992 Wave2 October to December 1992 Wave3 January to March 1993 Wave4 April to June 1993 This study was received in two formats, SIR and SPSS portable files. Sir version In each of the waves, Main and Diary records 1, 2, 7 and 21 contain the same data. Therefore only one file per record has been created per wave. Wave1 - Data for both Main and Diary, records 1, 2, 7 and 21 are in files g481m11, g481m12, g481m17 and g481m121 respectively. The corresponding diary records were not output. wave2 - Data for both Main and Diary, records 1, 2, 7 and 21 are in files g481m21, g481m22, g481m27 and g481m221 respectively. The corresponding diary records were not output. wave3 - Data for both Main and Diary, records 1, 2, 7 and 21 are in files g481m31, g481m32, g481m37 and g481m321 respectively. The corresponding diary records were not output. wave4 - Data for both Main and Diary, records 1, 2, 7 and 21 are in files g481m41, g481m42, g481m47 and g481m421 respectively. The corresponding diary records were not output. The variables are the same across all waves for both Main and Diary. ORIGINAL DATABASE NAMES G481M1 = W1MAINDB (wave1) G481M2 = W2MAINDB (wave2) G481M3 = W3MAINDB (wave3) G481M4 = W4MAINDB (wave4) G481D1 = W1DIARDB (wave1) G481D2 = W2DIARDB (wave2) G481D3 = W3DIARDB (wave3) G481D4 = W4DIARDB (wave4) Record 1 - all waves Variable C22BM1, C22BM2, C22BM3 - Brand of herbal tea The following are not listed in the brand codes for herbal teas: Main1 C22BM1 - 1 case of 261 Main2 C22BM1 - 2 cases of 263, 1 case of 264, 1 case of 267, 1 case of 269 C22BM2 - 1 case of 268 Main3 C22BM1 - 1 case of 272, 1 case of 273, 2 cases of 276 C22BM2 - 1 case of 274 C22BM3 - 1 case of 275 Main4 C22BM1 - 1 case of 261, 1 case of 266, 1 case of 277, 1 case of 279, 1 case of 280, 1 case of 281 The following is clarification about the meaning of variables SUPPNO, MEDNO, PLN A/B, PLN 1/2 and the units of measurement for the 'QUANT' file: 1) SUPPNO This variable is a count of the number of supplements the child was taking at the time of interview, it comes from question 39 on the main interview schedule. SUPPNO = 1, for example, means that the child was only taking one supplement at the time of interview, and thus only the SUPPLEMENT I box was completed. 2 ) MEDNO This variable is a count of the number of prescribed medicines the child was taking at the time of interview, during the dietary recording period. It comes from question F23 of the follow up questionnaire. MEDNO= 1, for example, means that the child was only taking one medicine, and thus only the PRESCRIBED MEDICINE I box was completed. 3) PNLA/B and PNL1/2 These variables refer to the product licence number. Most prescribed and non-prescribed supplements and medicines have a product licence number which uniquely identifies the manufacturer and the product. The first four digits refer to the manufacturer, the second four digits identify the product. If the interviewer was not able to see the packaging for medicines or supplements this information was not recorded. 4) Units of measurement for variables on the QUANT file All food consumed by the child was weighed in grams. Thus quantities of food consumed at either a daily (TDFDnnn) or weekly (WKFDmn) level are expressed in grams. However data are held as integers and thus to convert these variables to their true values one must divide the value by 10 (see Table 4 6). UNITS OF MEASUREMENT Users should note the following regarding the units of measurement for variables contained in the BLOOD file of the Main database: In the published report the units of measurement for a number of variables are SI. To convert the information contained in the Archive's data to SI units, Fig. 4.2 in Volume 1 of the User Guide needs to be consulted. CASEID in files G481D130, G481D230, G481D330, G481D430 Users should note that the Caseid variables in these files have all values set to zero. They are labelled as follows in the original SIR format database files: "Record 30 - Lookup (special case 000000 - Nutrient Lookup Table supplied by MAFF)" Therefore, rather than corresponding to individual cases, the data in these files comprise a lookup table for the nutrient components of the named foods in the variable 'Foodname'.
